
Arkansas schools have received
national recognition for their progress,
and Phillips County has some of the most progressive in the state.
Six public schools serve the Helena-West Helena District with an
enrollment of approximately 4,200 students. The public school system
is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. In addition, there are a number of excellent private schools in the area.
A special system is in place in the public school system for gifted and talented students. The primary emphasis of the program includes
curriculum and staff development, provision of media materials that specifically target higher levels of critical and creative thinking, shared resources and academic competition.
A Preschool program for disabled 3-5 year olds began in 1987. It
presently serves more than 200 children with a variety of disabling conditions. Speech, physical and occupational therapy services are provided to children requiring them.

The Kipp School was established in 2002 as a tuition-free open-enrollment charter school in Helena/West Helena, Arkansas. Today, Kipp serves children in grades fifth and up and with a mission to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and character needed to succeed in top quality high schools, colleges, and the competitive world beyond. Students are accepted regardless of prior academic record, conduct, or socioeconomic background.
Students are in school longer than most public school students, from
7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, for four hours on Saturdays, and for a month during the summer. In spite of the long hours, average daily attendance at KIPP Schools is 96%. Students complete over two hours of homework each night. Teachers are available on cell phone for
assistance. Students, parents, and teachers sign a Commitment to Excellence form that confirms their commitment to the school and to each other towards achieving success. The Kipp school provides
rigorous college preparatory instruction in balance with extracurricular activities like martial arts, music, chess, and sports. In addition, the school year culminates with academically-oriented experiential field lessons to national parks, historically significant regions, and college campuses.
In higher education, Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas is a modern facility nestled among the beautiful hills of Crowley's Ridge. It offers a wide range of educational opportunities with day and evening classes, financial assistance, flexible scheduling, quality programs and state-of-the-art equipment.
Two vocational-technical institutes are located close by – Crowley's Ridge Technical Institute in Forrest City and Rice Belt Vo-Tech School in Dewitt, which offer courses that are beneficial to local industry.
Eleven area colleges and universities offering associate through masters degree programs are within a two-hour drive. Also within commuting distance is Memphis State University, offering degrees in law and medicine.
